I enjoy visiting the U.P. in late June - the days are very long given the
northern latitude and the blackfly season is usually winding down or maybe
even over.
I did a 6 day workshop last June, at the beginning of the month, and had the
worst experience with mosquitoes that I've ever had - this includes numerous
trips to Alaska (where the mosquitos are so big, some claim they are the
state bird) & probably 40 or so trip to the U. P. The mosquitoes were so bad
I had to use the shelter of a car to change lens & on several occasions the
swarm was so bad it changed the exposure on a given scene. But, there were
no blackflies, which I feel are far worse than mosquitos - they can leave
nasty welts. The tics were as bad as I've ever experienced - even tho I was
fully clothed and 'sealed up' I had to do full body scans when I was done
for the day.
In spite of the issue with bugs, I really enjoy the many aspects of the U P.
year round.

Several outstanding images in this month's PUG but Lake Superior really
stands out - remarkable photo!

As for the cold weather - we visited Skanee in June, 2001 and had temps
over 100F. The local paper said that L'Anse (the nearest actual town) hit
105F and was hotter than Phoenix, AZ that particular day. But then we
visited Grand Marais in July, 2011 and nights dropped into the 30's with a
steady 40mph wind off the lake. Had to fire up the furnace in the shack...
er housekeeping cabin... we were staying it. Fun times up there.

Malcolm - late August in the U P of Michigan can be a bitch. More like
late Oct/Nov in some northern states. Not like you want to be out in that
kind of weather but rather be wrapped up in a book by the fireplace.

Wow! This is indeed an engaging and gorgeous gallery>
My personal favorites are Ken Waller's view of a lighthouse in the
mist, David Brooks' sunset and Christine's eye-level view of swimmers
in the chilly waters of Lake Michigan.
Great theme, and great submissions!
