Hi,

I think those shots, all from the early 1950s, were made with a
pre-production, experimental Leica M3. It has long been Leica's habit
to have Magnum photographers test them, and recently Klaus Bjorn
Larsen tested the M7 for them.

Some of Elliott Erwitt's contacts from the time show the same effect and
I recall that he mentioned the camera in a talk I went to last year. I
imagine the film gate (is that what it's called?) was slightly larger than
24x36cm, and corrected in the production model, which came out in 1954. The
exposed rectangle is not entirely centred either.
