Thanks, Frank.

Mao seems still to be a revered figure in China, along with Yat-sen
and Empress Dowager Cixi. There certainly were many more in line to
view Mao's remains at the Mausoleum in Tiananmen square they were
waiting to see Lenin in Red Square when I was there.

They seem to avoid the word "communist," at least around westerners,
but instead speak of Mao as the founder of "The New China." His
excesses appear to be overlooked because basically things are better
now in China for most Chinese than they ever have been.

Ideology seems to have given way to nationalism and consumerism.
However one feels about the current government, Beijing is certainly a
modern, efficient, clean and prosperous city. I was amazed by the
total lack of litter and graffiti and the obvious care taken to
beautify the city, with trees, flowers and pleasant open spaces all
around.

Simply trying to access the internet, however, quickly reveals the
tight control the government maintains over everything.
