Dave, years ago Pentax recommended doing the focus adjust test at the center of the zoom range. More recently I saw a recommendation to do the test at the long end. This makes more sense to me, and is what I do (with satisfactory results). At the long end you have the smallest margin for error, so you'll get the best result.
