Frites are a Belgian invention. The historical facts are recorded in Asterix Chez Les Belges, which I commend to all. It happened when Asterix, Obelix and Abraracourcix visit Belgium to determine which is the bravest tribe in Gaul, and involves boiling oil, apples and some very bad puns.
