In case any of you were wondering:
1. If you are using a Wansen-brand cheap radio wireless flash
controller, you may find that it works better when the sending unit
on the camera and the receiving unit on the flash are both set to the
same channel.
2. More seriously, you may also find that this setup is a bit
unreliable even when channel synchronicity has been achieved, but
reliability/consistency seems to improve if you trigger a Test flash
via the sending unit each time you power up the flash. This may save
you several trips through the surf out to the rock where you have
your flash balanced so as to light up the foreground boulder, as you
fiddle with connections etc.
3. If you drop your AF540 FGZ II in the lake and it lands on a
partially covered rock and the battery door pops open and the
batteries fall out and water fills the battery compartment, and if
you then leave the flash with battery door open, on the shelf in the
motel room for two days, and if you then take said flash home and
pack it away, and if you then remember to check it after a few days
and install new batteries, then you will find that the flash works
just fine. While I don’t recommend following the above procedure, it
is comforting to know that the WR claim for this flash apparently has
some merit.
Stay tuned next month, same time, same station, as your intrepid
field photographer and his close companion Obviousman take on the
continuing challenges of photography in the wild…
