I like the pics--both are very evocative. Since Conrail snuffed it years ago, you must be referring to Connecticut Shore Line East as the operator. I've seen (and heard, and smelled) a few of their trains go by, and all three senses indicated that they were diesels. Why they should be running diesels on electrified lines is a mystery.
