I had a similar problem years ago when I first got my DS body and was using it
with manual focus lenses. All of a sudden the shutter would only fire
intermittantly and I was about to return it, and then
I noticed the AF/MF switch on the body had accidently gotten switched to AF and
that was the problem.

Not photography-related, but a couple years ago I couldn’t get my furnace to
run. I called a friend who works in the industry and does freelance work on
the side. He looked at the thermostat, switched it from cool to heat, and the
problem was solved. I felt pretty stupid, but was more than happy to give him
$50 for his trouble.

Itemized bill:

Hitting the equipment with a hammer: $2
Knowing where to hit the equipment: $9,998
