Hey! You're talking about my Alma Mater! :-)

"Uncle Charlie" was Charles Sinsheimer, a ex-Caltech man who despised the
banana slug as our mascot and proposed some silly sea animal as our mascot. We,
the student body at the time, disliked him and his absurd notion of turning
UCSC into a mini UCLA, fought back with a campus-wide referendum and kept our
slug.

I worked for Caltech later and found that Sinsheimer was just as much disliked
there...

Banana slugs are large, yellow hermaphrodites who engage in hours long sexual
couplings and contribute to the ecosystem greatly by processing leaves and
other vegetation into nutrient mulch in the forest. A perfect mascot for a
campus which was founded to teach liberal arts on the principles of
cooperation, collaboration, and learning as opposed to competition, aggression,
and hyperbole. Our sports activities were designed to teach us about
fair-mindedness and team spirit rather than ruthless "win whatever you can by
besting the other guys" aggression. Funny thing was that by learning teamwork
and collaboration, we tended to win most of our competitions... :-)

Sorry for the soapbox, but I was honored and proud to be a part of the UCSC
history and spirit. I love the place and cherish the wonderful education and
excellent people there, many of whom I still count amongst my best and closest
friends these thirty-some years later.
