Sigma has just announced a 20mm f/1.4 art lens. I have heard a lot of
good about the optical quality of their new art lenses. I don't know
which annoys me more, that they've announced a lens I can't afford with
functional specs that would be very handy for a lot of the photography
that I do, or that it isn't (initially) being offered in Pentax mount.
It is also supposedly "full frame" compatible. I wonder how it compares
optically with the Samyang 24/1.4 which I keep hearing is the gold
standard for astro-landscape photography.
Looking at their offerings which Pentax doesn't have anything to compete
with:
24/1.4 (24x36)
35/1.4 (24x36)
30/1.4 (aps)
18-35/1.8 (aps)
24-35/2.0 (24x36)
85/1.4 (24x36)
They also have a selection of both fisheyes and telephoto zooms that I
don't think Pentax has anything to compete with. I have first hand
experience with some of the quality tradeoffs on some of their lenses
(my 20/1.8 and 50-500), but at least they offer lenses that will do
these things. My 20/1.8 wide open isn't as sharp as my 16-50 at that
focal length, but that extra stop and a third often more than makes up
for the difference in optical sharpness.
