It's almost 20 years since I first went to Ethiopia and I made a point on that trip of visiting the museum in Addis where Lucy lives. I wanted to see the real fossils, so I was rather disappointed when I learned that the display was a cast. Of course the real ones are kept in secure specialised storage.

I also asked about organising a visit to the Afar region, but the cost was prohibitive - jeeps, armed guards and supplies for several days. It's a tough area - you have to admire the team of paleontologists who spent so long out there.
