One of my friends and classmates at Dartmouth, Kevin Lowther, was one of the first college goalies to wear a face mask. He was injured by a puck to the face early in his college career, just about the time that Plante first started wearing a mask in the NHL. He missed most of a season, and when he came back, did so wearing the mask, which was unheard of back them.
Those were real men, who manned the crease with a bare face!
