Beautifully exposed. Dan! Believe I'd prefer it as a vertical accomplished by cropping 'prox 1/3 from the left side.
I can see many potential crops for this photo, each one would be a different and valid interpretation.
The three alternatives that leap to my mind start with cropping off the left third of the photo, so a bit behind the person. There's a square crop with him in the center, and rectangular crops with either his head near the top, or his feet near the bottom.
I also think that a square crop just slightly larger than him, with him filling the left two thirds of the frame would be very strong, and would really emphasize him I do worry a bit that the blown out area on his face and arms might become too prominent in that case. If they do, try converting it to black and white, you have the range of tonality to support the black and white conversion, and "blown out to white" isn't nearly as distracting in B&W as it is in color.
This photo, as it sits, is a nice photo of the forest, with a man in it. Having him in the center brings your attention to him, but having him so small makes him the object of the sentence (The forest, with a man in it) rather than the subject (A man, in the forest). Other crops would emphasize him more, up to and including cropping out almost everything that wasn't him.
I think that a study showing these different croppings would be a great example of how composition of a scene can really change the story and mood of a photo.
By the same token, converting to B&W and playing with the luminance of brown versus green would also change his prominence in each of the different compositions.
