Thanks for your comments, Mark. I probably should have kept my "story" for after.

Magnetite dust used to be the scourge of Phalaborwa housewives until the mines were forced to cover the dumps with soil. The pano shows that it is virtually impossible top keep such a plant clean. The train is middle left. A tailings pipeline goes through bottom left. The ripples are not terraces but marks about a metre wide made by a reclaiming device.

I like how you framed up the image, with the train sinking into the
lower left corner. Quite and industrial scene.

Magnetite (Iron ore - Fe3O4) is a by-product of the Copper flotation plants
in Phalaborwa. Over half a million tons has been extracted in about 50
years. Only a limited amount is used to make steel, Haematite (Fe2O3) being
preferred. However, a considerable amount is milled fine to be used in a
slurry for heavy medium separation in the coal industry. A slurry with an SG
of about 2.5 allows crushed coal to float while the silicate rocks sink.
Most of the Magnetite is recovered magnetically & recycled but continual top ups are necessary. The plant in this Pano produces a couple of hundred tons of finely milled Magnetite a day. It is transported by rail & by road to the
coal mines in those reinforced plastic bags you can see at the right.

Scroll R for a view of the active part of a Magnetite dump.
