Dave, My "photo computer" is a 5-year-old Mac mini running Lightroom 4. All of my photos are on a 1T Firewire 800 external hard drive, which is now a little under 3/4 full. The internal HD has the catalog files and serves as the "scratch disk". It doesn't work with lightning speed, but it's fast enough handling K-5 DNG files.
Sometime soon (whatever that means!) I plan to replace the internal HD with an SSD, and shift the image files to a 2T external drive. (I may even upgrade the OS from Mountain Lion!). Going through old files and deleting unwanted ones takes more time than I have. YMMV, since you're retired!
