I agree with you re distracting hard edged shadows. As always with my
shoots I experiment and push my boundaries. In this shoot I wanted to
purposely mix soft and hard light and the risk is that I'd end up with
some fishy shadows. It depends on the angle of the light, the pose,
and what surface is opposite the subject from the light source. In
some shots it was all perfect, but in many I was not so lucky. I tried
to arrange the spill from the key hard light to land out of the scene,
but not always possible in a small set like we had.

But as it happens, this style of lighting is favoured by the fans of
this vintage genre, so they won't notice so much. And the better shots
were submitted to the mag. Most of them worked out better than these
ones did.

I learned much from this shoot and I'll be refining my technique for
the next, you can be sure. :)
