Mark, I have and love the lens. It handles very well and is not too big. It's manual focus is very smooth. One of the few lenses that I am keeping for my 35mm gear. It has a recessed rear element so allows use of the 1.4XL converter. I don't have the 2XL so don't know if it works with that. With the 1.4XL, images are still very good. No noticeable loss of contrast or sharpness.
I have a Tamron 2X-AF converter and couple with the FA *200/2.8 I do see loss of contrast, much more than loss of sharpness. It's a combination that I rarely use because of the resulting images.
