My first digital camera took SmartMedia cards. It was a Fuji DX-8. 640x480 resolution. I bought it a the Navy Exchange in Yokouka Japan in 1998.
The camera cost $400 and the cards I got were 1 or 2 MB. Interestingly, that camera would output video via a composite jack but it couldn't record and had no mic.
