I've had no problems with OS X updates loading properly. Compatibility with older software-you have to check with the vendors. 10.6.8 is very very old now, five major revisions back; the problems get worse the longer you wait. Apps need to be kept up to date too.
I update everything as it comes along in most cases. A little work every month or three rather than a massive amount of effort every few years.
