Hi!
Larry, I don't have any clue about 6TB drives, as I currently use 2TB
drives and my brother suggests that I upgrade to 4TB ones, though I am
leaning towards bigger 6TB HDDs.
I can add to the anecdotal evidence towards SSD. Years ago, at least 2
if not more, I switched from 500 GB HDD to 256 GB SSD as my primary
drive. Before that, for more years, again, at least 2 more, I was using
60 GB SSD for my LightRoom catalog and cache. In theory, list archive
may have posts from these times.
My current storage layout is 2 pairs of RAID-1 (mirror) 2TB HDDs for
storage and 1x256 GB SSD for system. The SSD is split into two
partitions - one for OS (Win7) and another for LightRoom catalog and
cache. This is due to historical reasons as you can see above. Size of
LR catalog file is 1.75 GB that corresponds to a notch more than 98,000
photos.
Cold Windows start up takes less than 20 seconds. Start of LightRoom
takes about 3 seconds. I mean - time between double click and the moment
I see the LightRoom screen on one of my monitors and selected image on
the other. I should point out that it takes about 5 seconds more to
start the Develop module from within LightRoom.
I would hazard a guess that modern hardware (my computer is not modern
in any way) would be faster still.
Sorry, I did not help much.

I'm researching a few questions right now.
The first is that I will need to buy a couple of 6TB drives for my raw
files. Does anyone know of any particularly good deals on such?
The second is that I've heard a lot of anecdotal evidence that an SSD
for the primary drive, and for the lightroom catalog will make a big
difference in performance. The one person I was able to find who
benchmarked this found no difference in performance:

Has anyone done any actual benchmarking on this? SSDs do give a
benefit in latency, but do they have any higher of a data transfer
speed? What about PCI-Express SSD cards? Are they any better than
SATA SSDs?
