I think I might have actually asked about this on the PDML a while back
and had someone point me to it. It's not quite so much that, as
applying a gradient to one of the lens elements. I suspect that it only
affects the system when it is wide open.
I wonder if you could also do something with "lacework" on the aperture
leaves so that the edges of the aperture are themselves effectively a
gradient.
