It is indeed a tough walk, particularly because you walk on the same
path as the donkeys, who leave a lot of little surprises for the
unwary hiker.  I first visited Santorii 20 years ago, by which time
they had installed a cable car as an alternative to the donkeys.  The
trail and the cable cars take you to the main town -- Fira.  We took a
bus from the new port on the South end of the island to Oia, the most
picturesque and colorful town, located in the North.  One also takes
the bus to get to Akrotiri, the archaeological site where they are
still digging out the village buried by volcanic ash 3,600 years  or
less.
