I am guessing you, Alex, might be referring to that here.

Sigma wouldn't have needed to buy anything. When Pentax made the K-Mount they didn't put a patent on it, possibly because they had been burned rather badly years earlier when they had patents on the instant return mirror overturned "for the good of the Japanese camera industry" and didn't want to go through it all over again.
