I have two rules:

1) Pelican case, plus (TSA - approved) padlocks.

2) My own insurance.


The so-called "pro" photographer in the story above got half of the first one 
right;
at least he had a Pelican case.  But that's it.  If this had been my case it 
wouldn't
have popped open. And even if it had I wouldn't be fighting the airline over a 
claim;
my insurance company would have paid me (full replacement cost, less $500 
deductible),
and they'd be fighting the airline to get it to reimburse them.  If they won, 
then it
deductible would be repaid. This could well take six months or more (as it just 
did
with a claim when somebody backed out of a parking bay in a supermarket lot 
right into
my car, then tried to claim this was somehow my fault), but I wasn't waiting 
for ages
to get the repairs/replacement done.
