Hello Mark, when much of Europe were still in the dark ages, wore animal skin and were wild, the Romans were a highly evolved, advanced and a cultured lot - read civilization before Christ (BC).
They "tamed" much of "wild Europe & Britannia". Brought modern skills and knowledge - astronomy, architecture, the arts & drama. Of course the only other Civilization more advanced then was the Indus Valley Civilization & India. Regards.
