You interpreted the "sound" correctly, Alan! HA!
Have watched them attack and injure a robin and then tear apart 
what appeared to be it's nearly finished nest. 
My one satisfaction is that they hate and fear our 10 year old
stoic cat.
If I understand your question, it wasn't shot near the range limit
of the 55-300. Was 'prox 25'(?)
