Actually it has been reported that he finally did that. He is no longer a US citizen.

He is a U.S. citizen by birth on U.S. soil, a so-called "anchor baby" if
you will.

U.S. law requires citizens to pay taxes on income wherever earned. The
way the U.S. tax code is rigged, the actual dollar amount of his
liabilities are probably minimal, and a good tax attorney could probably
make them almost completely vanish beyond a token amount.

Johnson has on several occasions announced his intention to renounce his
U.S. citizenship, which would eliminate his U.S. tax liabilities, but
doesn't seem to have followed through despite numerous opportunities to
do so.

How can it be right that a person non-resident in the USA since he was 5
years old, and with no USA-sourced income, AFAIK, be due to pay taxes to the IRS? In any case, tax offsets probably meant nothing was due in the net.
Typical media beat-up.

It gets even better.

Turns out he's a U.S. citizen who doesn't pay his taxes.
