It wasn't in range for what I'd consider macro that I was having the
problem. Close focus, in that many lenses don't focus that close, but
many do. It was the transitional range. I.e. taking photos of sushi.

"macro close", sometimes the focus will rack out to full macro and will stick
there. It doesn't reach the end, decide it couldn't find focus and rack back in towards
infinity focus. It just racks out to the end stop and keeps trying to focus closer, even
though it is at the end of its travel.
I wonder if it's some sort of aliasing on phase detection where it's gone past
half a phase out of sync and is trying to reach the other one.
Has anyone else ever encountered a similar problem?
