You might want to take a look at RawTherapee. I haven't used it in
quite a while, but it seemed quite capable as a Raw Converter/Image
Editor not all the bells and whistles of Photoshop, but more capable
than a straight raw converter. I chucked it basically because it
developed issues with K20D files, and a fix was taking forever to
appear. It's probably fixed by now. It was also slow on the machine I
was using then, but that was a very slow machine.

If you "roll your own" you're stuck with the choice of Windoze or
some flavor of Linux, and there's not a Linux version of PhotoShop.
Although, it may be time to begin giving GIMP another look.

Started the quest for Windoze 10 on my Photoshop computer yesterday

Again following the procrastinators guide, I made an image backup
before
starting. That went smoothly, even better than it did on this
computer.
Forced a roll back to Windows 7 because Windows 10 just wouldn't work.
Lag time was incredible. Something as simple as a restart took over 30
minutes. There's not way to load into Safe Mode. I'm pretty sure the
problem was something in a video driver, even though I had a video
driver that was supposed to be good for Windows 7, 8 & 10. Couldn't
get
a new Windows 10 specific video driver to install.
As noted above, I made a system image backup before embarking on this
adventure. I've been trying since 7:00am this morning to get Windows 7
Backup & Restore to recognize it.
At this point, it looks like I'm going to have to find all of my
original software media and install from scratch.
