I'd keep the K-3 line with higher MP counts, I'm sure somewhere there's
someone who wants to have a 36mp APS-C sensor, so that's the K-3III.
Personally I don't need much more than 16mp to print big enough, but I
know others want the higher pixel counts, (~20MP), the big two have in
their APS-C sports/action cameras. In fact one can make a billboard
sized print with a lot less that 10mp. but I'd like to get the benefit
of better auto focus and faster frame rates even if I never shot at
those speeds. So I'd like the camera to appeal to them as well.
Why prefer the K-5 to the K-3 layout?
1.) I really don't want to lose the dedicated manual controls for
metering pattern and AF modes.
Especially as
A.)the K-3 control changes were made to facilitate Movie
recording, where Pentax Movie capabilities
are almost universally panned. (a lot of people see the k-3 as
a step backward especially in movie AS
from the K-5). To heck with convergence, it's a still camera,
that can take movies in a pinch not
a movie camera.
B.) I really like the locking mode dial, it's really easy to get
used to and can't ever see wanting
to turn it off. Anyone complaining about that so much that a
shooting control was removed to fix
the problem, but not complaining about losing a shooting
control... well it makes me wonder.
2.) The size difference. It isn't much but the K-5 body size just feels
so good in my hand, the best Pentax DSLR I've ever held, I like it and
want to keep it.
They could put the FN button back on the new K-5III, (that used to be on
the K20D and earlier models, taken off the K7/K5[II(s)] bodies, then put
back on the K-3, to change the behavior of the 4 way controller). They
don't have to, there may not be enough real estate for that. I can't
see that changing card storage behavior needing a dedicated control,
that could easily go on the info menu, or be made an option for the info
menu, most people probably only set it once. I've gotten used to the OK
button being pressed for a longer time to change the four way
controller, it's pretty much the only thing that still is allowed to
beep on my K-5II, to confirm the change.
Finally, I just want them to stop moving the buttons around. It's taken
me about two years to get used to the differences between the K20D and
the K-5II. Muscle memory is a bitch sometimes.

For that matter, why not a K-3III?

Funny, I keep thinking that Ricoh should take a page from Canon and
Nikon. Now that they have a FF, go back and revisit the K-5, and build
a K-5III same body and controls, 20MP BSI chip, Higher burst rate, (gasp
maybe even faster than 10fps)*, bigger buffer, (more than 40 raw), with
faster data bus, (even the K-3 doesn't take full advantage of Class 10
SD cards), the AF module from the K-1, the image processing algorithms
from the K-3. Leave the OVF pretty much alone. It would be a poor mans
D500. Maybe throw in a second card slot. Second best option do the
same thing in the K-3 body. Would they sell a lot of them, I don't know
but I'd buy it.
*Not that I need it for my shooting, but hell, why not.

Well, as the resolution on the K-1 in crop mode is approximatly 15mp
you've already got your wish. The K-5IIs...
The K-5IIs has different buttons, a different UI, the sensor is
several generations back, the autofocus is several generations back
....

We had another round of exams at the dojo yesterday, two nidan (2nd
degree black belt) and one sandan (3rd degree). I was shooting with
the 28-105 on the k-1 and the 28-75 on the k-3.
I'm in the middle of the long slow job of processing the photos. But,
I've noticed a few things. First of all, in full frame mode, the K-3
is just too slow for "rapid fire". In crop mode, it is noticeably
slower than the k-3, but definitely fast enough. However, when the
action really heats up (like in randori where several people are
simultaneously attacking one person), even in crop mode, the
buffer on
the K-1 is just too small.
On the flip side, even in crop mode, the photos are a LOT cleaner
than
the images from the k-3. I wish it were possible for me to just buy
some larger ram chips and solder them in and the K-1 would be the
best
Pentax crop sensor camera by far.
I find myself wishing that they come out with a new top of the APS
line which is basically a K-1 with an APS version of the ff sensor,
and a bigger buffer, with all of the buttons and other UI just the
same so that my fingers don't get confused swapping between the two
cameras.
