For the kind of photo you posted, Rick, I'd want to use a tripod anyway. You need a small lens opening to help image the rain streaks, and your subject matter is a still life. Perfect match with a tripod.
When I'm in a full photographic mode, I *always* have a tripod in the trunk of my car "just in case." It's shocking how often I use it when I do so.
