Might also be a hybrid with a domestic duck someone abandoned to the
wild. I've seen that around here with Mallards.
Someone gets their kids ducklings for Easter & by mid-summer they've
released them on one of the local flood control lakes.
By the next summer, the domestic ducks have taken up with local Mallards
that stay here year round & there will be ducklings that almost look
like Mallards.

Northern Pintail is the other species it resembles a lot. In fact,

I agree, Gonz. I can find my way to
the Northern Pintail with a generous
amount of allowance for color
differences.

Very nice and sharp capture.
It looks like some type of Scaup to me, but it differs enough from the
normal ones to remain more of a mystery.

Well, my first guess is if it's not in Birds of North America, it might be
from somewhere else, Europe or Asia most likely. However I did try a couple
of online interactive bird searches, and it doesn't seem to exist.
Maybe you've discovered a new species, or it's an artificial organism sent
by aliens to spy on the most advanced species on our planet... Bird Dogs.
