That was pretty much the view of a lot of the critics at the time it came out, but re-looking at it they're changing their minds.
Either way, Kubrick was a genius. I've watched it bit-by-bit before on the small screen, but often find my mind wandering when I'm watching anything on TV, but in the cinema I was transfixed from the word go.
