I have a Sigma EF500DG Super that I have used very rarely with the K-5
(the sensor being so good); but it has done well. The K-5's flash
features are well supported. My best results have been in slave mode
with the pop-up as the trigger. Getting the channels sorted out is a
bit of a pain (despite instructions translated from Chinese, via
Gaelic and Inuit), but it has worked very well.
This shot (from a photo booth at a church holiday party) was ISO 800,
1/90, f/4, Sigma flash bounced off a projection screen at camera left,
camera flash in controller mode:

The EF610DG Super is the current model.

The originals, not by me, were done with her mother's hair still in
curlers.
My assigned task is to reshoot them.
But I really do want something better than the pop-up flash on the K5.
Lens will be either the F50/1.7 or the FA28/2.8, though the FA28-105 may
be
used as it's respectable.
Anyway. I've not gotten a digital flash before. What's a recommended
unit
suitable for the K5 that will give quality results.
You're going to need a really big opener for that can of worms.
It's my experience that it's harder to learn to get good results from a
flash, than it is to learn to use a camera. Once again I'll suggest the
book "Light, Science and Magic". I'll also suggest that if you can, you
will
want to get the flash off the camera and use radio triggers. The yongnuo
triggers are cheap and reliable. Unfortunately I have not had nearly as
good of luck with their speedlights. The YN560IV is an awesome manual
flash,
for about a month, until it stops working.
I had horrible luck with my fgz540, but other people have had better
luck. I
am curious about the fgz540-II. I've got a metz 58, and it's
serviceable.
If you don't need TTL, you may want to check out the lumopro

Or their radio control version
