The majority of macOS users nowadays are using laptops with trackpads (and desktop with trackpads...) where the "natural" direction of the scrolling gesture is inverse to the way it used to work with a mouse. That's why the default is inverted. If you use a mouse, then switching it to the old standard makes sense.
