Sounds like some of us are giving ourselves upgrades for Christmas.
Just finished mine...new motherboard, i7 processor, 32 gig RAM. Booted
to Win 10 Pro with no problems. Image files all moved to a 5TB, USB 3
external drive.

So Friday I decided to finally upgrade my Photo PC to Win7.
Saturday I obtained a small fast HD for the system and a copy of
Windows 7 Ultimate.
After two days of update HELL, (can someone please tell me why
Microsoft has created an updating system that's so buggy that it tries
to install already installed updates multiple times).
I decided to buy a SSD from which to run the OS and primary programs ,
and bought the cheapest 240gb SSD I could find.
The improvement in performance is phenomenal. Even though the drive
is cheap, (did I mention that?), it /seems/ to be hundreds of times
faster than the mechanical drive. Which will still serve a purpose.
It's going to be a live backup of the finished system, just in case.
Now all I have to do is install all my data HDs and reinstall my
tools, but reboots, and configurations take orders of magnitude less
time.
Next upgrade will be to max out the memory.

Being old doesn't seem so old now that I'm old.
