At the risk of offending (like that ever bothers me), this is a
pretty specious statement.
Here in North America, and I include Canada in this as well, and
I expect the rest of the western world, there is a pretty vast
number of people who are extraordinarily underpaid.
I speak specifically of people in the retail and service sector.
These are people who get worked the hardest, get to suffer the
abuse of disgruntled people over situations they have little or
no control over, and have little or no job security.
Anyone who plays off one store against another, or goes to a
mail order rather than a local business so they can save a few
dollars is promoting this, and it spreads from the frontline
person right back to the people who produce the raw materials to
make whatever you are buying.

If we practice this sort of sweatshop capitalism in the western
world, why would you hold a higher standard for a "developing
nation" as the CBC so cutely calls countries that don't have the
economic advantages of North American or other Western nations.

If we don't buy from countries like Malaysia, who are we really
hurting? Are we hurting corpoations and their boards of
directors or are we hurting the very workers whose plight we are
sympathetic towards?

If you are really concerned about the state of workers affairs
in Malaysia, I suggest you would be better advised to buy the
Malaysian made product, to help out the workers there as best
you can now, and then lobby your government to put pressure on
the Malaysian government to pass some worker protecion laws.

Just remember, though, the reason Japanese companies go to
developing countries for labour is because we want cheap
products here in the west.

We are the problem, not the Malaysian companies.
