First of all to Doug, who does the core heavy lifting that makes this
list possible. Also, to the staff of the PDML Annual who do an
incredible amount of work to put out my annual dose of humility.
I'd also like to express my appreciation to the list in general. While I
will never be as good of a photographer as I was 40 years ago in high
school, the examples and feedback on this list has proven crucial for
what improvement I've made in my own work over the past few years.
Anyone who as spent any amount of time on pretty much any of the other
online photography fora should quickly recognize the exemplary level of
technical expertise here. Most other places it seems that people who
have just learned how a fast lens and wide aperture will give narrow
depth of field pontificate at length to people who have just moved from
taking photos with a smart phone to a DSLR.
While the work of each member of the list isn't alway "my cup of tea",
looking at examples, and reading feedback on them is incredibly helpful
when I'm working on a photo that isn't in one of my accustomed style.
Just being able to look at a scene that lends itself to someone else's
style is a tremendous shortcut to enabling me to get a photo that
doesn't entirely suck.
However, the thing that makes this list so special is not technical help
but the people. While we have our differences, they pale in comparison
to what we have in common, made ever so much precious by the
geographical diversity of the list. Coming from a time when calls to
grandparents 120 miles away were expensive enough that they were rare,
and short, I consider having friends all over the world invaluable. And,
you are all truly friends. Your joys and hardships affect me as much as
those of my friends who I might see in person every week or two. Thank
you all for your contributions to a community that is ever so important
to me.
