Alfama is one of the oldest areas of Lisbon, built on a hill with a
castle at the top. The "roads" are shelter-skelter and often
interrupted by stairs, reputedly to frustrate invaders. The area was
almost entirely spared in the 1755 earthquake. It's an enjoyable area
to wander around and get lost in, especially with a camera.
