So, I finally got Bridge to install.
The solution was to download a zip file, (doesn't Adobe have any
corporate standardization at all, some things are packaged in Zip files
some in Zip7 files some in gzip files, some as stand alone installation
exe files), containing what would have been packaged on a CD or DVD if
Adobe still did such things.
Installation was fine, but then I had to figure out why my thumbnails
were screwed up everywhere, without breaking Adobe Camera Raw. Which I
did on my first attempt.
Then comes the fun of getting bridge to let me choose the editor/raw
converter I want to use from a list, which can be done, but isn't
obvious, and Adobe isn't much help, (I often wonder if they're any help
at all), in that regard, for the current version.
So now only about a month after upgrading my OS I'm able to actually
process files into photographs, the way I used to.
As an aside, the I also upgraded to DXO Mark 9.0 as my primary raw
converter. I find it does a fine job of processing raw files, and
doesn't force me to put my files into a library like Lightroom, but
whereas the 8.0 defaults gave pretty good results from any camera it
actually knew about, the 9.0 results are way the hell off. I find i
have to do major corrections to every file. I guess I shouldn't
complain, the software is free, but still. It doesn't help that I can't
go back to 8, now that I've installed 9.
