Hey Richard, > I was sorry to see that the Duxford airshow site doesn't seem to have >even a tentative list of what aircraft will be flying - what are they >thinking?
All the ships are WWII vintage or older. No jets. > The Royal International Air Tattoo the weekend after Duxford seems to >have a good selection flying, including spitfire, lancaster, hurricane, >tornado, jaguar and nimrod: > >http://www.airtattoo.com/airtattoo_2002/participation/aircraftframe.html > > Do any of you guys go to that show? The RIAT is held each year at Fairford and is the largest military airshow in the world. Actually for the past 2 years it's been held elsewhere while Fairford's runway has been completely rebuilt - it's a standby NASA shuttle landing site - but it's back mthis year bigger and meaner. Yep I know it very well. Filmed there many times, but in fact I've given it up. I did it from 1992 through to 1997 but I got so pissed off with the heat and noise and hard work that it became - we used to do both days, about half a dozen portable single cameras, shooting what we could (my position was always down between the crowd line and the runway, at about where they touched down on landing, or where they started from on take-off), but in later years it got bigger, work-wise, and we had to start manning cameras linked to a 'scanner' (mobile tv gallery where the director sits cutting up shots live) and thence onto huge display screens so the crowds could see the displays via the screens also. 6 hours non stop on a camera trying to follow fast jets and God knows what - cobblers to that. Too much like hard work!! Yeah, it was a blast for me 92 thru 95, but after that I hated it and didn't so it again. Show-wise, it's a belter. Anything and everything there. Eurofighter made it's debut there. Past highlights: Russian Bear, Antanovs, Boeing B1, Stealth Bombers, Stealth Fighters, B52s (mind you, I filmed them when they took off to kick ass in Libya a few years ago now, 4am and shooting the 52s as they screamed down the runway at Fairford off to fulfill their missions...), B-17, B-this and B-that. Plenty for all. Highly recommended, but if you're not there by 9 am you simply won't get in before lunch! Our crew call time was 6.30am. Fun while it lasted.
