I attach the prongs as close to the end of the roll as I can.

There is a slight trick to get the outside end of the film to lay
correctly. Usually, at least for me, the last inch or so kind of
sticks up through the spiral. I have to slide my finger along this
piece of film, pressing down while I do so, to pop the film into
place.

Where was the dead spot?
