First of all, that's a great photo. Paul Stenquist wrote:
I generally try to shoot birds in trees or on other natural perches, but the nuthatches rarely land on nearby branches. Once they’ve had their fill at the feeder, they fly to the top of trees.
I wonder if you could take some sections of tree trunk or log and hollow out places to put birdseed, which wouldn't be visible from where you shoot. That way it would show the birds sitting on what seem to be branches or tree trunk.
