I was in college about the time the first few Hitchhikers books were being published, and as each book made its way through my circle of friends, we'd each read the best bits aloud to whoever was in earshot.
About ten years later, a girlfriend gave me a copy of Good Omens by Pratchett and Gaiman. which I immediately thought was a much better expression of that style of humor. Good Omens, of course, was the gateway drug to Diskworld.
