Because I feel that a real top-of-the-line model is what's missing in the
Pentax 35mm slr line-up. Something that can fill the heritage of the LX.
Personally, I want a camera l would like to use the next 20 years or so;
just like my LX. In order to be a fine and capable camera these days it
will be expensive. Also, I think it's a good idea now to release a
connoisseur camera that can be a long term seller targeted at the film
connoisseurs; I'm certain that 35mm film will be around the next 20 years.
Since the boss of Pentax camera division uttered last year that he wanted
to make an LX with AF, I sincerely hope that he will be allowed to do just
that.
My personal vision of such a camera is a model that maintain all the
features of the LX, perhaps with the exception of interchangeable
viewfinders, but add multipattern- and spot metering and, of course, auto
focus. I hope that they maintain the semi-mechanical shutter and manual
film wind. The basic camera can have focus confirm and trap focus as
standards whereas AF and motor drive/winder is added by something similar
to the battery pack for the MZ-S. This will contain the motors for AF and
film transport and also batteries for more power demanding applications
like AF and winding. They could even make a more powerful version for
ultrafast AF and film transport.
Of course, this camera should have the OTF meter of the LX and up-to-date
AF system. Following the AF/motor drive module is a new camera back
containing the interface for AF - like AF point selection etc. Also, a
digital back could have been implemented in the same manner: the back with
the relevant interface plus a module that contains the AF motor and the
digital bits to support the back.

But a 645 and a 67 will never be a 35mm camera.
