It was built as an homage to Steve McQueen's Mustang from "Bullitt" ... I seem to recall reading that the actual car Steve McQueen used in the movie was recently located and restored. It is said that Steve himself wanted to buy it after the movie production was over, but it had already been sold/disappeared. I believe it showed up somewhere in Mexico.
