Erwitt did indeed "pass himself off" as a photojournalist, and still does. That's according to Magnum Photos for who he was the president for three years. "To this day he is for hire and continues to work for a variety of journalistic and commercial outfits." Neither photographer (McCurry, Erwitt) wore two photographer hats at the same time. I think that people are judging based on random context-less photos which, when shown together, give the impression of being created with a similar intent, but which clearly aren't. Erwitt's advertising photos cannot be held to the same standards of veracity as his PJ photos.
