Thanks for the suggestion, John. I'm not sure I want to spend good money on this machine - it's mainly used when I travel and as a third backup for my photo collection (it's convenient to have my entire catalog with me when I travel but I don't rely on the machine as a main backup).
Apart from the Update problem, the biggest drawback is the size of the existing HD. It's just about got to the stage where I wont be able to store my complete image archive. I don't think an SSD will help there. As an aside, I know Vista gets a lot of bad press but I've found it quite reliable on this machine (so much so that I never bothered to install the Win 7 update that came with it).
