For those of you that are worried about the direction that the photo world
is going, check out this great book. It's called "Primative Photography, A
Guide to Making Cameras, Lenses, and Calotypes". Talk about getting back to
basics! His premise was that he was afraid that in the near future, he would
not be able to work the way he likes to, he feared manufacturers dumping large
format films and printing papers, so he wanted to figure out how to do
photography without any commercially availible materials. His instructions are
pretty clear cut, and he takes you through each step of mking film holders
(wet and dry), making two different types of cameras, 3 different types of
lenses, making paper negatives, and making Calotype prints. It looks like a
blast to me, and easily doable. I'll get to use some of the older, funky, and
until now useless lenses I have floating around...
Even if you aren't going to make this stuff, it's an excellent resource on
lens abberations and early photo processes. Check it out! It's written by Alan
Greene.
