Which is where scanners come in _really_ handy.  I have produced
(bloody awful, photographically) perfectly viewable images from
almost transparent slides.  As I rate my scanner about 3 on a
scale of 1 to 10 - 10 being best - I am assuming that my efforts
are near baseline.

You lose a lot of colour and other information but they have a
character of their own, rather in the way of original sepia
prints.

For me, this is the one facet of digital imaging which is
invaluable.
